This programme features the works of four violin masters who were active in Turin, Mauro Iurato’s home town, from the end of the 17th to the 19th century. They shaped the whole European school of the violin afterwards, not only by their musicality but also by their teaching. The beautiful and impressive melodies of Iurato’s violin and the delicate and graceful harpsichord and piano tones of the Argentinean keyboard prodigy, Escande, are intoxicating.
The first, Somis, was a pupil of Corelli and Vivaldi, whose works display a virtuosity and imagination unparalleled for their time.
Next came Leclerc, who came from Lyon to Turin to learn violin techniques from Somis and became one of the most influential violinists of his generation.
Next came Pugnani, Somis’s best pupil and music director of the Royal Orchestra of Turin, who, as a peerless virtuoso, made a name for himself throughout Europe, from France to England and Spain.
Finally, and by no means less important, Viotti was a pupil of Pugnani, a violinist as well as a composer and above all a pedagogue of unparalleled skill. From his school of violin music actually arose the modern French school of violin music, whose pupils (including the celebrated Lord, Kreutzer, Baillot and de Berio) became teachers of Wieniawski, Ernst and Ysaÿe, the progenitors of all violin playing today.
