Antonio Salieri and His Legacy
at Kobe City Chuo Ward Cultural Centre (1F Multipurpose Hall)
Mauro Iurato (violin), Giuseppe Mariotti (piano)
A distinguished classical concert series at Kobe Chuo Ward Cultural Centre.
This instalment features Antonio Salieri, the representative Italian composer who flourished at the Viennese court.
Appointed Director of Italian Opera at the Habsburg court in the late 18th century, Salieri elevated the prestige of the Viennese opera scene. His career saw him supply works to opera houses in Paris, Rome, and Venice, with his compositions performed extensively throughout Europe throughout his lifetime.
He was later appointed Kapellmeister to the Austrian Emperor, overseeing music at the court chapel and its affiliated school. Even after his own works ceased to be performed from 1804 onwards, he remained one of the most important and popular teachers, continuing to exert a profound influence on the Viennese musical world. While it is well known that Mozart was his pupil, he also influenced such renowned musicians as Beethoven, Schubert, and Liszt as a teacher.
Two Italians who studied in Vienna, where they encountered works reflecting the influence of Salieri – arguably the Italian musician and teacher who exerted the greatest impact on the Viennese musical world – will perform.
Pianist Giuseppe Mariotti is also the successor to Salieri as Music Director at Vienna’s Minoritenkirche.
