BACH RENAISSANCE in KOBE
Masterpieces from J.S. Bach and F. Mendelssohn
Starring: Mauro Iurato (Vn.) Xavier Luck (Fl.)
Yutaka Hayashi (Vc.) Mariko Sano (Pf.)
“Tradition is to protect fire, not to worship ashes,” Mahler said. In 1829, the young 20-year-old conductor Mendelssohn revived the Matthew Passion, now famous as one of Bach’s masterpieces, with a splendid interpretation, awakening the dormant “Bach Renaissance Movement”. and rescued the music of Bach, now called the father of music, from oblivion.
From that time on, Mendelssohn continued to feature the works of this great maestro, introduced Bach’s works into his concert programmes, and, a few years before his death, edited Bach’s late organ works for publication. At today’s concert, we would like to celebrate the spiritual friendship and the century-long teacher-student relationship between Bach and Mendelssohn, who are said to be the “great architects of music”. For Bach, Mendelssohn was an ideal student and a devoted colleague.
